I am Edwin Pérez Mercado, known as Kozo Tattoo. I was born in Lares, Puerto Rico, and moved to San Juan in 2005 to study photography, production and marketing at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras.
Later, I studied Film Production at Universidad del Sagrado Corazón, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2014. I also served in the Military Reserve and worked in the mortuary field, an experience that deeply shaped the way I see identity, memory and the value of every tattoo.
I started tattooing in 2012 after experiencing how bodies could be identified by their tattoos during my time in the military. At first, I never imagined becoming a professional tattoo artist, but the craft became one of the most important paths of my life.
My first six years were dedicated to fineline, small tattoos and lettering. After refining my technique, I moved into large-scale pieces, realism, portraits, freehand, cover-ups and black and grey, the area where I now consider myself an expert.
Through this work I have built many friendships, tattooed local clients and visitors traveling to Puerto Rico, and even had the honor of tattooing former Governor of Puerto Rico Alejandro García Padilla. I speak Spanish and English, which allows me to work comfortably with clients from different parts of the world.
